Reflective Learning at Work - A Position and Discussion Paper

The relevance of reflection for learning has long been recognised,and there is a substantial body of theoretical work on reflection.However, many questions regarding reflection at the workplace are stillopen, especially regarding the actual occurrence of reflection in differentworkplaces, and the efficient support for reflection.In our ongoing work to examine the relevance of reflective learning atwork in various organisations and to design technological support, wehave collected and discussed existing literature on reflective learning.Within this paper, we discuss relevant and open issues in four majortopical areas that are relevant to the above research goal, namely (i) thereflection process , (ii) the various scopes of reflection such as individualand organisational learning, (iii) the context or setting in which reflectionmight take place and (iv) how we can facilitate and scaffold reflectionby means of technology. We aim to provide a basis for discussion and toillustrate that research on reflection, especially in the context of work, isfar from finished.

A Preliminary Study on Interruptibility Detection based on Location and Calendar Information

Modern communication technology-such as mobile phonesincreases our level of availability, but also raises the risk of being inappropriately interrupted. In this paper, we present our on-going research on automatically detecting a user’s interruptibility. This is the first step towards (i) contextualizing the modus of message notification, ie making the notification more or less attention-grabbing, and (ii) contextualizing message ranking, ie, prioritizing messages according to their relevance for the user’s current level of activity. We describe our approach of automatically detecting a user’s interruptibility based on location and calendar information. Both kinds of data are easily available in a mobile setting using smartphones. Second, we present a preliminary study that evaluates (i) whether GPS information is available sufficiently for our purpose in a real-world setting, and (ii) whether the computed interruptibility corresponds to a user’s own perception of interruptibility.

Applications of Semantic Wikis - Bringing Complementary Models and People Together: A Semantic Wiki for Enterprise Process and Application Modelling

This chapter describes some extensions to and applications of the Semantic MediaWiki. It complements the discussion of the SMW in Chap. 3. Semantic enterprise wikis combine the strengths of traditional content management systems, databases, semantic knowledge management systems and collaborative Web 2.0 platforms. Section 12.1 presents SMW+, a product for developing semantic enterprise applications. The section describes a number of real-world applications that are realized with SMW+. These include content management, project management and semantic data integration. Section 12.2 presents MoKi, a semantic wiki for modeling enterprise processes and application domains. Example applications of MoKi include modeling tasks and topics for work-integrated learning, collaboratively building an ontology and modeling clinical protocols. The chapter illustrates the wealth of activities which semantic wikis support.

The role of Reflection in Maturing Organizational Know-how

The Knowledge Maturing Phase Model has been presented as a model aligning knowledge management and organizational learning. The core argument underlying the present paper is that maturing organizational knowhow requires individual and collaborative reflection at work. We present an explorative interview study that analyzes reflection at the workplace in four organizations in different European countries. Our qualitative findings suggest that reflection is not equally self-evident in different settings. A deeper analysis of the findings leads to the hypothesis that different levels of maturity of processes come along with different expectations towards the workers with regard to compliance and flexibility, and to different ways of how learning at work takes place. Furthermore, reflection in situations where the processes are in early maturing phases seems to lead to consolidation of best practice, while reflection in situations where processes are highly standardized may lead to a modification of these standard processes. Therefore, in order to support the maturing of organizational know-how by providing reflection support, one should take into account the degree of standardisation of the processes in the target group.

Motivation and User Acceptance of Using Physiological Data to Support Individual Reflection

While research comes up with new sensors and physiologicaldata is gaining more attention in private usage, sensors play no role inprofessional learning. In this paper we shed light on the motivation touse physiological sensors in the workplace. Three user studies have beenconducted in five companies to assess the motivation to (a) wear sensorsand (b) reflect on physiological data during work. Based on these studies,we show that workers would be willing to use physiological sensors, butthe benefit of the awareness about the own physiological state is oftennot clear or the usability of sensors is insufficient. Moreover, in stressprone professions like emergency care there are already successful copingstrategies in place. Introducing physiological sensors has to provide clearbenefits by offering solutions to act on this awareness and focus on thepracticability of the sensors.
