Das Know-Center beteiligt sich als wissenschaftlicher Partner am EU-Forschungsprojekt EEXCESS – „Enhancing Europe’s eXchange in Cultural Educational and Scientific Resources“.
Ziel des dreieinhalb Jahre laufenden EU-Forschungsprojektes (FP7), das mit insgesamt über fünf Millionen Euro durch die EU gefördert wird, ist die verbesserte Nutzung und weltweite Verbreitung von kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Informationen durch den Einsatz modernster Internettechnologien.
Das Know-Center wird unter der Leitung von Dr. Vedran Sabol und Dr. Roman Kern die Forschungsthemen „Adaptive Augmentation User Interfaces“ und „Personalized Recommendation“ bearbeiten.The EU research project EEXCESS – Enhancing Europe’s eXchange in Cultural Educational and Scientific Resources, funded by the European Union with a total of over five million Euros, kicked off at the beginning of February with a meeting in Graz. In the next three and a half years, the FP7 EU project aims to foster a better use and a worldwide dissemination of cultural and scientific information by means of the latest internet technologies. The Know Center is taking part in this project as a scientific partner.
Anfang Februar waren die Kick-off-days zum EU-Forschungsprojekt EEXCESS – „Enhancing Europe’s eXchange in Cultural Educational and Scientific Resources“, das Know-Center beteiligt sich dabei als wissenschaftlicher Partner. Ziel des dreieinhalb Jahre laufenden EU-Forschungsprojektes, das mit insgesamt über fünf Millionen Euro durch die EU gefördert wird, ist die verbesserte Nutzung und weltweite Verbreitung von kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Informationen durch den Einsatz modernster Internettechnologien.
Angesichts einer unüberschaubaren Menge und Nutzung von Web-Inhalten (wie u.a. Bilder, Videos, Infografiken, Statistiken oder Texte) in den Bereichen Kultur, Wissenschaft und Bildung verfolgt EEXCESS die Vision, den Schatz an kulturellen oder wissenschaftlichen Inhalten für alle potentiellen Nutzer zugänglich zu machen. „Since results will be made available as open source framework along with necessary training materials, EEXCESS will have substantial impact on the utilization of cultural and scientific resources within Europe and beyond.“
Durch personalisierte und kontextualisierte Empfehlungstechnologien zielt das Projekt darauf ab, existierende Distributionskanäle wie Blogs oder soziale Medien um kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Long-Tail-Content anzureichern.
Unter der Leitung von Dr. Vedran Sabol und Dr. Roman Kern wird das Know-Center die Forschungsthemen „Adaptive Augmentation User Interfaces“ und „Personalized Recommendation“ unter die Lupe nehmen. „Die Herausforderung liegt darin, die Daten von verschiedenen Memory Organisations (d.h. Organisationen, die digitale Kulturgüter verwalten) möglichst effektiv und gleichzeitig unaufdringlich an den Users zu bringen, ohne dass die Informationen explizit abgefragt werden müssen“, betonen Dr. Sabol und Dr. Kern in diesem Zusammenhang.
Neben dem Know-Center beteiligen sich neun weitere europäische Partnerinstitutionen: JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Österreich) als administrativer Koordinator, die Universität Passau (Deutschland) als wissenschaftlicher Koordinator und INSA – Institut national des sciences appliquées de Lyon – als wissenschaftlicher Partner. Als test-bed Partner zählen ZBW – Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft (Deutschland), bit media e-Learning solution GmbH & Co KG (Österreich), Archäologie und Museum Baselland (Schweiz), Collections Trust (Großbritannien), Mendeley Ltd. (Großbritannien) sowie Wissenmedia GmbH (Deutschland). Diese test-bed Partner sind hauptsächlich dafür zuständig, Data-Pools, Community-Plattformen im Projekt einzubringen, um den Communities Daten zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Given the current broad volume of data and the diverse use of web content (i.e. pictures, videos, infographics, statistics and texts) in the fields of culture, science and education, EEXCESS’ vision is to unfold the treasure of cultural, scientific and educational content for the benefit of all users: “Since results will be made available as open source frameworks along with necessary training materials, EEXCESS will have substantial impact on the utilization of cultural and scientific resources within Europe and beyond.”. Through personalized and contextualized recommendation technologies the project seeks to augment existing content dissemination channels users habitually use, such as social media, and content creation techniques users regularly conduct, like writing blog entries, with cultural and scientific long-tail content.
Under the leadership of Dr. Vedran Sabol and Dr. Roman Kern, the Know Center focuses on the research topics Adaptive Augmentation User Interfaces and Personalized Recommendation: “The challenge is to provide users with data from different memory organizations (i.e. organizations managing digital cultural assets) as effectively as possible and at the same time in an unobtrusive way, without having to retrieve information explicitly”, emphasized Dr. Sabol and Dr. Kern in this context.
Along with the Know Center as scientific partner, a further nine European partner institutions are taking part in the project: JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (Austria) as administrative coordinator, the University of Passau (Germany) as scientific coordinator and INSA – National Institute of Applied Sciences (France). The test bed partners involved in the project are ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics (Germany), bit media e-Learning solution GmbH & Co KG (Austria), Archäologie und Museum Baselland (Switzerland), Collections Trust (UK), Mendeley Ltd. (UK), as well as Wissenmedia GmbH (Germany). These test bed partners are principally responsible for bringing in data pools and community platforms into the project as well as making data available to communities.
