Software Engineer: Database and Storage Systems

We support the ISDS Institute in the search for applicants for this fulltime position. (from 1st January 2022 for an initial term of 2 years)

You would get the chance to work in the initiative Austrian DataLAB and Services funded by the Austrian Government to foster collaborative approaches between universities in the fields of DataScience and High Performance Computing (HPC). The explicit goal is to increase usability and we are looking for experienced engineers to help us build a prototypical federated private cloud and design best practices for its usage.

Tasks:

  • Design and implement our distributed storage system (e.g. CEPH, iRODS and Minio) on Openstack
  • Be part of a platform team that implements and runs early stages of our IaaS and PaaS for a small set of (friendly) users
  • Work with the other engineers on the platform team on continuous deployment and testing
  • Propose, reason and implement other open source storage systems to complement our offering if required
  • Design and implement access controls/AuthZ and reasonable availability by using backup or active-passive redundancy and recovery mechanisms
  • Ensure security by choosing and implementing modern connection protocols
  • Use Infrastructure as Code and gitOps to implement your concepts
  • Use tests to assure data integrity and confidentiality as required by European laws for non-PII data
  • Document your designs and HowTos

Qualifications:

  • Several product cycles worth of experience in relevant roles using modern tech stacks
  • Excellent knowledge of data storage systems and stateful deployments
  • Prior experience with declarative infrastructure deployments
  • Good understanding of how architectural choices influence failure modes
  • Proven experience on access control concepts
  • Experience in CI/CD is a big plus and experience with GDPR compliance is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of at least one Cloud Stack (public or private) including containers and networking basics
  • Good grasp of Linux and filesystems and solid knowledge of git
  • Experience with Openstack is beneficial but not required
  • Knowledge of programming languages is a plus but not required
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and openly, especially during remote work and Can-do attitude

We are required by law to specify the minimum gross salary according to the collective agreement, which is about 3.295,9 Euros per month (14 times a year) for a full-time position (40h/w), depending on the professional experience. We are, however, willing to overpay the minimum gross salary depending on experience and qualifications.
