A Know-Center Team (Roman Kern, Andreas Juffinger , and Michael Granitzer) wins the 3rd price in an international challenge of the CLEF Forum (Cross-Language Evaluation Forum.
The research groups had to develop system for question answering. Thereby the systems had to find answers to questions like „Reports on pesticides in baby food“ and „Reasons for the UN troop withdrawal in Bosnia“ within a number of 160.000 articles. The KC System achieved the third rank out of ten running systems. Also worth mentioning is that the KC team was one of only six teams (out of 16 teams) that was able to realize a cross language system which answers Spanish questions in English.
Die internationalen Forschungsgruppen haben dabei Systeme zur Beantwortung von vorgegebenen Fragen entwickelt. Die Antworten zu Fragen wie „Finde Berichte über Pestizide in Baby Nahrung“ und „Ursachen für den UN Truppenabzug in Bosnien“ mussten dazu aus einer Menge von 160.000 Artikeln extrahiert werden. Das System des KC Teams lieferte dabei die drittbesten Ergebnisse (von 10 lauffähigen Systemen).
Bemerkenswert ist auch, dass das KC Team eines von nur sechs Teams war, dem es gelungen ist, auch Spanisch formulierte Fragen auf Englisch zu beantworten.
