Digitalization as opportunity for breaking the silos and enabling holistic value creation


Currently, the automotive market generally presents a skill-based organization with entities (teams, companies) specialized around a specific (set of) skills. These structures are very efficient for local and sequential optimizations, especially for products with large lot sizes. Important drawback, however, are the agility of such structures to manage complex changes impacting the entire product, and the capability to identify and implement disruptive solutions overcrossing teams and companies boundaries. At the same time, major automotive trends such as electrification, autonomous driving, connectivity and diverse mobility are strongly reorganizing the market in terms of customer needs, required skills and market re-organization. Digitalization is enabling transversal value creation throught the silos. In this Chapter, we review the opportunity for digitalization and present two industrial examples related to industry4.0 – digitalization over the product lifecycle, and energy consumption – well-to-wheel.
