Scientific publishers want to sell publications for money, whereas the public itself would like to have open and free access to research results. By practicing Open Peer Review, the Know-Center is actively contributing to Open Access and its development.

As reported in the newest issue of “Forschung Spezial” by  the newspaper Der Standard,  Open Access is a controversial yet highly relevant topic, for which both advocates and critics have their say.

One of the supporters of Open Science and Open Access is Peter Kraker, a researcher in the Social Computing Team at Know-Center. His research about scientific dissemination and publication culture in the web have showed, among other things, that Open Access can lead to more transparency and dialogue in the frequently criticized peer reviewing system and thus open up the way for a new type of review, the  so-called Open Peer Review.
